David Neel was born into a rich heritage of Indigenous artists, such as: Charlie James, Mungo Martin, Ellen Neel and Dave Neel Sr. This legacy is the basis for his contemporary and traditional Native American carvings. He states that "Tradition in Northwest Coast Native art is a foundation to build upon, not a boundary to restrain creativity."

Initially, he apprenticed with Kwakwakwak’awakw masters Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick, and for 30 years he’s followed the tradition of carving masks, totem poles, canoes and bent-wood boxes. He spent years studying the various Pacific Native art styles, including: Coast Salish art, Haida art and Tsimshian art before developing his version of contemporary Kwakiutl art.
