This Northwest coast Native Portrait Mask portrays a young Chief Mungo Martin wearing face paint of the Hamatsa, a Kwak'wakawakw secret society, which is still practiced today. Mungo was a leader in traditional Kwakiutl art and culture, and a First Nations master carver whose totem poles are in numerous cities internationally. He is credited with composing over 200 traditional songs and he hosted the first public potlatch after the repeal of the Anti-potlatch law. He remains one of the most revered Northwest Coast Native artists of all time.
