    35" x 37" x 9"

The governments of Canada and the United States removed Native children from their homes and placed them in residential schools, up to the 1970’s. This program was meant to remove the language and culture from the aboriginal people through alienating the children. In Canada over 150,000 children were removed from their communities, and many never returned home. Carved in 1990, this piece is one of David’s early masks dealing with a contemporary topic. The outer mask depicts and adult face, which opens to reveal the child crying within.
