Traditionally Northwest coast Native masks were used to portray contemporary topics and people: such as a portrait mask of the chief's daughter, or a mask depicting a time of starvation. After seeing masks by the old masters in the museum collections, David started to carve masks about contemporary issues and events. This mask, carved in 1991, represents the issue of urban smog.
